It is vital to reach out to those that are sincere in helping you advance and progress in any way that he/she can.
After reading my blogs, I feel disappointed because I did not put forth the upmost effort to reach out to individuals that could have given me guidance on how to start my own auto dealership. I have come to realize that networking makes a difference between you and the next person that may be going for the same position or in competition when it comes to business. But, I do feel that networking does have some negative aspects regardless of ethnicity that may be. Many people do not owe the person they may be networking with and that can be a problem. For example, I was referred to a contact that owns two auto dealerships and he was able to provide insight on things that I did not know. Yet, as I reflect on the interview, I am still where I was before I interviewed him. It is very unlikely that someone that does not know me will allow me to be authorized as a buyer under their auto dealership license. Even if an auto dealer requested a large portion of money from me to become a buyer there would still be room for error for me to jeapordize their license reputation if I chose not to purchase a vehicle at a dealer auction. I have never reached out to an individual because where I'm from, you do not deal with people that you do not know. So, I came into this course with the mentality that could care less if someone else that did not know me would help me progress.
There are aspects of this course that I really enjoyed and helped me to mature as an individual. Networking allowed me to contact the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs of the College of Education after I conducted an interview with her and another lady that were conducting a research study on how successful black males have made it through college. I did not know who they ladies were and what positions they held but, the Associate Dean, Celina Simas, volunteered to help me reach my goal of attending graduate school once the interview was finished. I immediately e-mailed her after she gave me her business card. A couple days later, she e-mailed me and scheduled an interview with the Dean of the College of Education. After missing the graduate school deadline after a month, my networking allowed me to still be admitted into U.I.C.'s College of Education. It is weird because today, April 28th, I have officially found out that I have been admitted into the Elementary Education Instructional Graduate program! Two other things that I liked about the class was the flexibility and the adaptability to our actual lives as humans.
Three things I did not like about the class were the reading selctions and the recommendation to speak and interview with someone that was out of our comfort zone, especially a caucasian person. Also, I did not care for being penalized when the interviews were not completed. If someone does not want to help you they will not.
I would suggest different readings, more interesting movies, and more discussion panels throughout the semester. Overall, I have learned alot in this course and I would like to thank my professor for a well taught course. I'm in graduate school!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Another Step Towards My Goal of an Auto Dealership
Hi everyone,
My next step towards opening and owning my own auto dealership is to find an actual dealer that holds an Indiana Wholesale Auto Dealer license so that I can hopefully be included on the license as a buyer in order for me to build experience within the dealer auctions. I have heard that they can be tricky and misleading, basically take advantage of newcomers so I want to be prepared when I enter these auctions. I do not know anyone personally with an Indiana Wholesale Auto Dealer license so I have created a Craigslist posting:

A Good Detour Toward My Dream of Owning my own Auto Dealership
Hi,
I have realized that networking is very beneficial after conducting a fruitful interview with a business owner of two auto dealerships on one of the most successful strips of dealerships in Chicago-Western Avenue. Sam, the owner of two dealerships at 6815 S. Western did not hesitate to provide honest and helpful information on how I should obtain my dream to pursue the automotive industry. The interview was not was I expected but it was everything that I hoped it would be; it allowed me to realize how I should go about opening my own dealership. Here is the interview as follows:
Q: How did you begin selling cars?
A: I have begin around the business of cars since I was twelve. My father owned his own dealership so I have been around it my entire life.
How long have you been in business? Also, how have you been able to remain in business as other dealerships suffer from the economic and are forced to close?
A: I have been in business since 1979. I believe I have stayed in business because my priority has been to make sure I take care of my customers. For example, I offer my customers a "50-50" warranty when they purchase a used car. So, if anything goes wrong with the car, I pay half and the customer pays half, as long as they still have the car that they have purchased from my lot. I do not know many dealerships that will offer that type of warranty to their customers. Many used cars are sold "as-is" without a warranty.
Q: Where do you get the cars that are offered for sale at your dealerships? Do you pay for an outside company to transport your new purchases or do you have your own car hauler/transportation?
A: Most of the cars came from newer model dealerships that would receive cars that their customers would trade-in. But, since the economy has taken a turn for the worst, the newer dealerships are not selling their trade-ins to the smaller dealership owners. It has been four months since Chicagoan dealership owners have been forced to purchase their inventory solely at auto dealer auctions. But, it is competitive because you have everyone at the same auction, bidding on the same cars. As for for transporting cars that I purchase from the auction, I have an outside transportation company deliver the cars to my dealerships for $50 per car.
Q: How do you advertise your business and attract potential customers?
A: I get a lot of customers that just walk in to my dealerships. We do advertise in websites such as Autotrader.com and an automotive magazine called Autofocus.
After these questions, Sam began to continue with the conversation of owning two auto dealerships so I sat back and absorbed any and everything that he had to say. Let's take a look at what he had to say, shall we?
We rely on cash transactions here. If you have great credit we can get you finance through banks like Chase. But, if you have bad credit, we can get you financed through a secondary finance company that can charge an interest rate up to 49%.
The best time to sell cars is tax season when everyone has their tax refunds. The best time to sell cars is now. I know some dealership owners that collect cars until it is tax season and then sell them.
One of the most selling vehicles would have to be minivans. I sell alot of minivans-families need minivans. So, I but a lot of minivans. But, I also have alot of people that sell me their cars. For instance, that Buick Grand National with rims that is outside; the owner put over $40,000 dollars into that car and then came into my delaership asking for $10,000. So, I bought the car. Many people are tight on cash and don't want to sell their cars but they have to.
Q: Should I purchase the property where I plan to sell my cars or lease?
A: I would suggest that you lease with the option to buy. Most people that lease property will have the option to buy at a later time. When that time comes, you should purchase the property.
Q: What are your expenses?
A: I have four employees: a porter, secretary, salesman, and a detailer. The salesman receives 15-20% commission from what the cars he sells. I contract mechanics do repair customer vehicles only when they are needed. Property taxes are always on the rise and auto dealers must renew their dealer license every two years.
After asking so many questions, I still did not have a clear understanding on how to start my own dealership until Sam made it clear. "If I were you, I would find someone that has an Indiana Wholesaler License and have them put you under their license as a buyer. You would have to pay them for the fees but you will gain the experience at the auto dealer auction. You have to know what is going on at these auctions because if you don't they'll trick you. They know when they have someone knew at the dealer auction. You'll think the auctioneer is saying $2,800 and he is really saying $5,800. Once you bid and win on a car there is no reversing a bid. You have to purchase the car."
After receiving this beneficial advice, I realized that my first step toward my goal was not a step that would help me progress toward opening my own dealership. Sure, I would have to print and fill out the Illinois Auto Dealer license form one day but there are steps that I need to take before I get to that point. My first step is to find someone that will list me as a buyer under their auto dealer license so that I can purchase cars at a wholesale auto dealer auction and gain some experience. As I post an advertisement on Craigslist, I patiently wait for someone to respond so that I can gain the experience that is vital to becoming a successful auto dealership owner such as Sam.

My auto dealership role model could not be reached for comment despite the help that I received from the professor. But, I did not give up. I was able to reach a role model in education, which is one of the five lives that correlate with my dream of owning my own auto dealership. Since I will pursue education, particularly in the urban communities, I asked David Schaafsma what his thoughts were on the charter school movement in Chicago. I am pursuing an alternative teaching certificate program that partners with CPS schools that have been "turned around" or are now, charter schools. Let's take a look at what David Schaafsma, Director of English Education, had to say when I asked a couple of questions via e-mail.
What comes to mind when you hear school reform and Chicago Public Schools?
I think school reform is a catch phrase. Are schools being re-formed? All
the time. The small schools movement is one interesting experiment I
support. Everything good is still being undermined by the triage system
CPS put in place whereby they pull the best students from bad
neighborhoods and create uber-schools like Whitney Young and Northside CP,
etc. leaving Crane and Manley and Orr in the lurch. Until inequities are
addressed, and they will not be, school reform can't be taken seriously.
Any efforts are undermined as well by No Child Left Behind and similar
polcies that punish schools for failures that the government created.
What role does charter/turnaround schools play in school reform?
I think that charters are an interesting experiment and create room for
creativity, but they are also a mixed bag: some of them are great, with
good ideas, and some of them are not good. See Geoff Reu's EE MA thesis on
this, borrow it from me. Turnaround schools are like shuffling the deck
chairs on the Titanic. Much ado without funding.
Do you feel teaching programs such as Teach for America, where all majors
are welcome, are effectively contributing to school reform or hindering its development?
I don't think they hinder, but they don't reeally contribute. They don't
know how to teach. The elitist assumption is that knowing subject matter
makes you a smart teacher, but teaching isn't primarily about subject
matter and content knowledge, it's about how to work with kids. TFA
doesn't adequately address this.
Are there any setbacks for students that proceed into the
education field without any prior education/theory from their undergraduate experience?
Yes, many, see above. What do you do in the classroom? The arrogance of
TFA is that it says pedagogy doesn't matter, that curriculum theory is
irrelevant. It's like college teaching. Pedagogy is beneath talking about.
Are there any negative/positive consequences for providing a set curricula
when people such as Bill Gates donates money to teaching programs such as
the Academy of Urban School Leadership?
Set curricula are always bad, fundamentally. People are not machines. But
I don't understand your question.
What is needed to equip Chicago Public schools students with the
educational foundation that will enable them to compete with suburban
school districts, or any other well funded school? Should students boycott
and be bused to suburban schools in order to shed light on the ongoing
issue of schools being underfunded?
The boycott like Kozol's Savage Inequalities brings attention to a system
of injustice. I think that poverty and crime undermine equity, too. Money
matters. You can't change the school system to overcome those problems,
but some cool things can be done, and are being done, nevertheless.
Is there any connection between CPS school reform and the 2016 Olympic
bid? If so, how will it affect the chances of obtaining the bid to host the games?
The crime rate will hurt the bid. They won't give Chicago the Olympics if
it is the Murder Capitol of the World, as it is. One kid a week has died
since the beginning of the school year. Daley is touting success in school
reform as the reason we should be proud of Chicago, the reason it should
get the Olympics, but at the same time, kids are getting murdered here at
an alarming rate. The reform is not working for all of the above, and even
if it were, this is a crime town. Not safe for the Olympics.

My Interviews
I was able to contact one of my former English high school teachers and ask her a few questions over the phone before her class began. It was a very short conversation but I was able to receive some type of direction on where I should be looking and applying after I graduate this May and pursue graduate school and employment in the education field. Well here it goes....
What is one of your favorite topics to teach as an English teacher?
Creative Writing, hands down. But, we no longer have the creative writing course at Prosser Career Academy. FYI: One of my poems will be published in After Hours magazine, so I am reading for the magazine this Friday at Molly Malone's in Oak Park at 7:30. It is a release party.
Considering that I am graduating this Spring, is there any assistance or advice you can lend in transitioning from undergrad to graduate school and possibly working in the education field?
Well, do you want to teach full time or part time? Clarify for me. I know that North Lawndale Prep is hiring, but I do not have the details. You might email them and inquire about this. Also, you may check into alternative schools. And, are you applying for grad school for next year or at a later date?
After the short interview, I was able to visit my old neighborhood and speak with Joe, owner of Quality Car Corner on the Northwest side of Chicago.
Do you provide your own inventory transportation of do you contract an outside company?
We actually provide our own transportation. With a tow truck, we bring back the inventory from the auction or other dealerships that may have trade ins.
How long have you been in in business and what has allowed you to do so?
Quality Car Corner has been around this area for over 40 years! We started out as a real small lot and now we have two locations. I believe we have stayed in business for this long because of our long-term relationship with our customers. Making sure your honest and can provide quality cars at a economical price will help customers return and tell others about us.
Do you service the vehicles yourself? If so, how extensive is the repairs?
We only do minor maintenance to the vehicles like oil/transmission changes, brakes, shampooing carpets, and minor cosmetic touch-ups if the car needs some body work. But, for the most part, the cars are sold as is without any warranty.

How long have you been in in business and what has allowed you to do so?
Quality Car Corner has been around this area for over 40 years! We started out as a real small lot and now we have two locations. I believe we have stayed in business for this long because of our long-term relationship with our customers. Making sure your honest and can provide quality cars at a economical price will help customers return and tell others about us.
Do you service the vehicles yourself? If so, how extensive is the repairs?
We only do minor maintenance to the vehicles like oil/transmission changes, brakes, shampooing carpets, and minor cosmetic touch-ups if the car needs some body work. But, for the most part, the cars are sold as is without any warranty.

Research Auto Dealer License Requirements
- Find out how much the license is.
- Find out how much the business license will be.
- Find out the site location requirements for the anticipated auto dealership.
- Locate possible areas to open a dealership, considering the demographics and competition.
- Compare monthly lease payments or the entire cost to purchase a particular lot.
- Decide which will be cost efficient-buying or leasing a auto site location.
- Assess how many vehicles will be able to fit in the site loaction, considering how much capital I have to purchase the automobile inventory.
- Locate and contact auto dealers that can provide the exclusive muscle/classic/hot rod inventory that is desired.
- Compare buying cars individually or wholesale in bulk if available.
- Locate an auto transporter once the inventory provider is confirmed. Or, assess whether it would be cost efficient to purchase my own truck & car hauler to transport inventory.
- Apply for auto dealer license and pay the mandatory fee.

I Have a Dream!
I found out that I my type is.....ISFJ. Which can be described as:
Quiet, kind, and conscientious. Can be depended on to follow through. Usually puts the needs of others above their own needs. Stable and practical, they value security and traditions. Well-developed sense of space and function. Rich inner world of observations about people. Extremely perceptive of other's feelings. Interested in serving others.
I was skeptical on how accurate the personality quiz would be, while I selected the multiple choice questions. But, as I read over the description of my personality type, I agreed with majority of its description. I am quiet most of the time, whether it is in a classroom setting or around people I am not familiar with. My quietness enhances my ability to be conscientious. I usually remain silent and absorb a particular person's personality through what he/she says or does. Also, I feel that I am greatly affected by those that may need me the most, especially my family. My life and its success is based upon those close to me. I feel as though I can not be fully content with my life unless the others around me are as well. My decision to pursue a career as an educator highlights the fact that I am interested in serving others, particularly those that come from low-income, urban areas, such as myself.

Touchstone: The appearance of the cars and the joy I know the cars will bring to the customers that choose to purchase from my dealership.
Role Model: Dontae and Ethaniel Edward Presley, my brothers. No matter how far fetched a dream may seem when it leaves my mouth, my brothers believe me when I say it. They know I can do it and will do it, as long as I want it to be accomplished.
Target: Become the top exclusive classic/muscle car dealership in Chicago, as well as the Midwest despite our terrible weather.

Assignment #3: Understanding Myself
Pick A Color
I am red. So, I am deeply affected by not only my own personal experiences but also experiences from others, whether they are considered close or not. I am bright because I have to shine rays of hope and happiness for those that may be stricken with the daily hardships that are included in life.

Private Eye
The person that lives in this spacious apartment definitely pays attention to cleanliness. The clean carpet throughout, polished bathtub, washed dishes, and neatly folded clothes signal that being clean is very important. When cleaning is not being done, a large display of empty expensive champagne bottles are indicative of a social atmosphere that overlooks the classic English literature novels, carefully stacked atop of a car sub woofer box. The high end home audio system, flashy Michael Jordan sneakers, and large flat screen television still wrapped in plastic states that shopping is a definite must. According to a large pile of envelopes, bills are also a definite within this person's lifestyle.

Ideal Environment
I would like to be placed in an environment where there are nothing but classic cars from the 1950's to the early 90's. Within this vintage car world would be intelligent, fun, and physically attractive women in their late 20's to escort the men as they cruise the long strips of road, free of pot holes, speed bumps, traffic lights, and stop signs.
Real Daydreaming
Lisa Raye is strutting down the stairs of my six bedroom mansion in a red silk robe towards the refrigerator filled with ice cold bottles of champagne. When she returns to the pool side, where I am reading an interesting book, she pops open the cork and ........
My Ideal Day
I rise from my California King bed at 5 a.m. and prepare to dress for my profession as a grammar school teacher. After driving to my school in a classic muscle car, I am cheerfully greeted by my students, which all are eager to learn. Around 3p.m., I depart from a productive day of learning and education and head to the barber shop to make sure that my hair is in top notch condition. Around 4:30 p.m., I pull into a high end car wash and give my baby a much deserved bath before I head home and dress for a highly anticipated date. At 6:30 p.m., I arrive at one of my student's home and Lisa Raye comes out in a stunning dress that makes me nervous. To be continued......
I believe the portion about me becoming a successful educator is indispensable. The material objects such as the muscle car and attractive date are very optional but desired. These material objects can be categorized as frills that would be nice but, hey, I don't need them in my life.

Assignment #2: What do you Love???
Interview with Allene Presley, my beloved mother
1) What was I like in the first 5 years of my life?
You always had a stomach problem, every since you were young. The doctor did not want to give you any x-rays, so she could protect your jewels. You were Student of the Month in Kindergarten! You had many friends. Ohh, and you cried a lot but, you were very attentive.
2) What things did I love, what games did I like to play, what did you think was unique about me?
I thought you were very smart and we anticipated that you would go on to a gifted school. But, you didn't pass the vision test. You liked to play basketball.
3) What did you think I would become when I grew up?
I always thought you would devote yourself to God. But, that didn't happen. I knew you always had potential to become anything you wanted to become.

One Thing I Love Activity
Since my 23rd birthday is around the corner, I felt it was the perfect time to do what I have always loved to do since high school-put on a fresh pair of Air Jordan sneakers, specifically retros. This past Friday, I was invited to a Bulls game so I decided that it would definitely be appropriate if I stepped foot into the United Center with Michael Jordan shoes on my feet. So, before heading out to watch the Bulls lose to the Toronto Raptors, I took my Air Jordan 11's out of the box and placed them on my feet. I can not describe the feeling of fresh Air Jordan's caressing the soles of my feet. It's an experience that one has to witness on its own. Since I was not able to sport my fresh Jordan's up and down my high school hallway like I did back in 2000-2004, the United Center was and is the next best location. At the conclusion of the game, it did not matter that the Bulls lost. What was important was leaving the building without anyone stepping on my crispy sneakers. I can honestly say that I made it out fine. #23 salute to all my authentic Air Jordan wearers! Keep hope alive!!

I am Darius Desean Presley.
Assignment #1: Who do you think you are?
1) Why are you taking Leadership for Change?
I needed two credit hours to reach my 120 hour graduation requirement and did not have a clue as to what class I wanted to register for. So, I asked my co-worker, Shakita Perdue, if she had any good suggestions. She not only suggested AAST 294 but, went on to inform me of all the positive aspects of the professor. With that being said, I decided to attend the first class an hour prior to it beginning.
I have decided to remain in AAST 294 because the topic of the course runs parallel to what I have not witnessed during my long years of education. I am interested in following the professor's approach on conducting this course without any regard to traditional instruction. I, too, will become an educator in a couple of months so I am hoping to develop my teaching philosophy as I remain in the course.
2) What do you hope to get out of the course?
To be honest, I would like to carefully examine and self reflect on all aspects of this course, only to self assess whether I will retain the material that will be presented throughout the semester. So, I guess what I'm hoping to leave with after taking this course is: a new perspective on who I am as an individual without limiting myself to other perspectives, as well as finding out why students are eager to register for any course that this professor teaches.

As a child, I was attracted and fascinated with my success in grammar school. I was doing well and I could not believe it. I began to notice that one of my stronger skills in school was and still is, writing.
I believe I live the most through my hearing and vision. I do not speak much but, my lack of speech is compensated with my hearing. I will listen and reflect on what is being heard so that I can prepare to express myself with writing. As for my vision, it's not the best but it has allowed me to see things and people for who they really are, even when they are not sure who they are.
I love to think of all the things that I want to create and build. I daydream of leaving behind small apartments for a large estate with a 5 car heated garage with the 12 foot ceilings. When I'm being realistic in my daydreaming, I love to plan for the day when I can repay those that supported me through the good and bad times.
I don't have any secret dreams, fantasies, or games that I have not told anyone. I do not hesitate when it comes to voicing my dreams because I want people to remember somewhere in their heads that I told them what I would accomplish when the time comes.
I feel that my interests point to my ability to remain grounded in dedication.
